The author says that genealogical research has been an important tool for providing context for the collection. “The majority of the collection was gifted by individuals wanting a good home for treasured family heirlooms. By using the census and other records, we’ve found information about the occupations, circumstances and faiths of many of the wearers,” says Edwina. “These details have helped us personalise the garments and bring their stories to life.”
The V&A acquired its first item for this collection in 1900 when it purchased a coat and breeches. The first wedding dress entered the collection two years later – its bodice is inscribed with the words, “Jean Smith married 20th April 1789″.
”Like that one, I feel this is the kind of exhibition people will travel to see,” says the director of the Bendigo Art Gallery, Karen Quinlan.
In Bendigo the V&A collection will be supplemented by a collection of 25 Australian wedding dresses, from pieces dating back to colonial times, sourced from institutions such as the Powerhouse in Sydney, to modern classics from designers such as Akira Isogawa and Toni Maticevski, and labels including Romance Was Born.
While the more historic pieces speak volumes about womens roles in the last three centuries, the modern gowns do the same while marrying tradition with contemporary sensibilities. Hence the flowing, christian louboutin platforms cheap, red Zac Posen piece and a decidedly odd dress that falls just above the ankle and is made of small, white leather squares embellished with aluminum; youd have to see it to decide if you would say yes to that dress, pictured on page 23.
Whether its the elegant pale blue lace dress from 1935 or the over-the-top Russian fantasy bride ensemble from 1986 and designer Bob Mackie, each dress on display says something about the bride who chose it. The point for me of the whole exhibition is that I didnt want it to just be a group of pretty wedding dresses, says Amneus. What I began researching was the history of marriage, of women in marriage and looking at womens status in society and within the institution of marriage and how that paralleled how wedding dresses looked over time. How it spoke to the decisions they and their parents made.
